Enhancing Food Access and Health Through Targeted Community Assessments

Every day, millions of Americans rely on worksites and public facilities for their meals, making these settings crucial for promoting healthier food choices. By implementing food service guidelines, we can positively influence the diets of those who eat there, contributing to their overall health and wellness.
 

To address this, our project focuses on conducting comprehensive food system assessments in targeted counties. These assessments will identify existing food access assets and gaps, while also considering the unique cultural, linguistic, health, and social needs of specific communities. This information will guide the adaptation of the Prescription for Health program, ensuring it meets the needs of priority populations.

Additionally, we will identify potential food retail outlets in each community to accept fruit and vegetable vouchers, making healthier options more accessible. Our efforts also include developing and distributing culturally tailored messages to support food system access, with a focus on the African American population in Lake County and the Hispanic and Latino populations in Oceana and Newaygo counties.
