LIVE WELL CAMPAIGN ENCOURAGES OUR 10 COUNTIES TO WALK TO LIVE WELL BY OFFERING COMMUNITY WALKING CHALLENGE
February 26, 2014 - Obesity is continuing to increase and the Michigan Department of Community (MDCH) and the Live Well Campaign have focused their efforts on reducing obesity through Governor Snyder’s 4 x 4 Health & Wellness plan. One of the four recommendations in the 4 x 4 plan includes engaging in regular exercise. In support with this recommendation, the local Live Well campaign announces a walking campaign and community walking challenge kicking off on March 1, 2014. Walking is a great opportunity to move more and to help improve overall health. Spring is the perfect time to get outside, enjoy the sunshine, longer days and warmer weather.
The Live Well campaign has set a goal for community members to challenge themselves to walk 100 miles. Community groups, worksites, or organizations may contact District Health Department #10 to receive FREE materials to implement the community walking challenge at their site. Individuals wishing to participate in the community challenge may contact District Health Department # 10 at 231-775-9942 ex. 1055 or visit Live Well at www.livewell4health.org. Community groups may start this walking challenge anytime they are ready between March and July. The first 100 individuals who complete the challenge will receive a free t shirt and water bottle.
The Live Well Campaign encourages all to participate by joining their friends and neighbors in walking the 100 miles. A simple walk each and every day can have positive health effects for everyone. It is important to remember that before you start any physical activity plan that you consult a doctor or seek medical advice from a health professional.
This challenge is supported by the Live Well campaign through District Health Department # 10 and other community partners.

How did you start your new year? In Cadillac, MI, a group of 47 people started theirs by getting in some physical activity at a free snowshoeing event. The event was held in Mitchell State Park at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center and was sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in collaboration with Live Well. Showshoes were provided courtesy of the DNR for those who did not have their own. Participants went on a one-mile hike on the beautiful snowy trail in the State Park. A campfire and hot cocoa were provided after the hike for participants to warm up. A great time was had by all!
Community members Peggy and Virginia love snowshoeing!
Live Well Team Members Caitlin and Jason tried showshoeing for the first time and had a blast!
